KIWAMIFO

An Opportunity for Vulnerable
Teenage Girls

In Tanzania many girls are denied the opportunity of education and there is family pressure to stay and help at home. The risk of unwanted pregnancy and/or being infected with the HIV/AIDS virus is high.

This small project was set up in 2008 to give some of these vulnerable teenage girls the chance to learn a skill that will generate an income, improve self esteem and confidence and so give them a higher standing in the local community.

Rogathe & Girls at KIWAMIFO

It was the idea of a local young woman, Rogathe, already a seamstress, who managed to rent a small property and with the help of a volunteer purchased a few sewing machines and materials.

Margaret & Garrie have been working with Rogathe for the last 2 years to help build up an income generating business that may help to sustain the group.

Currently there are 20 girls learning sewing skills for 12 months. They make and sell school uniforms, embroidered bags, cushions covers and table cloths.
