Ndoombo Community School
Giving young people a chance of secondary education
The Nboombo Community
In Tanzania, only 22% of children have the opportunity of secondary education. In the remote area of Ndoombo, high on the slopes of Mt Meru, there were no state secondary schools for those even lucky enough to have succeeded in primary education. A local man, Horace Nassari, decided he wanted to help young people in this deprived area.
Before any construction of the school could begin, he had to create a rough track to enable building materials to be transported to the site.
The School
Ndoombo Community School
The school opened in 2006 with just 13 pupils. It has now grown to accommodate 120 and includes separate hostels for boys and girls, as many of the children live too far away to walk on a daily basis. The school follows the state school curriculum and the target is for all pupils to achieve the School Certificate after completing 4 years.
Horace's vision is to give all young people in the area an opportunity for secondary education. Many of the pupils are disadvantaged and receive free education, others pay a contribution and some are sponsored
